GTK tagging in discourse

We’re currently using gtk3 tag for GTK3 topics and gtk for GTK4 (and probably questions common to both 3 & 4? ).

When GTK5 is out, will there be we gtkgtk4 tag rename, followed by a new gtk tag for GTK5 ?

The “gtk” tag is for all GTK-related issues, and I’d generally consider it valid for the latest API series (so gtk4, gtk5, gtk6, …). The “gtk3” tag is for topics related to a specific API series; once we have GTK5, and GTK3 is EOL, we’ll create a “gtk4” tag and retire the “gtk3” one.

The reason why I don’t want to create a “gtk4” tag today is to limit the amount of tags to follow or to post into. People are already bad at using tags and categories for new topics, adding more tags and specificity isn’t going to solve anybody’s issues.

So with GTK5 release, we’ll have GTK4 topics in both gtk (GTK4 topics tagged "gtk" prior to creation of "gtk4" tag) and newly added "gtk4" tags.

Okay. I think having a "gtk3" tag and not "gtk4" is a bit misleading.

I mostly read fewer topics tagged "gtk3", but would be interested in skimming through "gtk4" tagged topics. In that sense, I would find a "gtk4" tag useful, since most development happens in GTK4.

Hi,

I tend to agree with @Sid : when I see “gtk” I always wonder if it’s really gtk4, or if the user didn’t bother to check, or if they meant “gtk3” because they’re still using some prehistoric distro like ubuntu-20.04.

That makes me lookup every time in the user’s activity to try to guess the context, which is a waste of time…

You’re assuming that people will ever tag things appropriately, which is not the case. It’s been 5 years since we moved to Discourse, and tagging always happens after a review.
