What's the current state of the map display?

Is the map display on the path to be an included feature somewhen in the future? I’d love to use that.

Actually I just wanted to start a conversation in the discourse since it is crickets here compared to the moderate amount of discussion the mailinglist had. Still interested in the current state of the map feature though.

It is in the unstable release series (latest 0.31.1) and will be part of the 0.32 stable release. Whenever that happens.

I’m running a lot of nightly and “unstable” software here, how risky and unstable is shotwell-unstable in reality? (Not looking for a scientific quantification but maybe anecdotal cases.) Will it destroy my database and delete my images? Or is it generally kind of stable and just might crash from time to time?
Is there a PPA for the unstable?

There’s an unstable and nightly flatpak. BUT:

  • They are isolated from the host meaning you don’t have your data (There’s a work-around for that)
  • They will probably migrate your settings to the new namespace meaning that they disappear on the host (/org/yorba -> /org/gnome )

They are currently quite stable, the database format has changed though and will change again before 0.32 lands

Forgot the refs:

Nightly: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/shotwell/-/blob/master/flatpak/org.gnome.Shotwell.nightly.flatpakref
Unstable: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/shotwell/-/blob/master/flatpak/org.gnome.Shotwell.nightly.flatpakref
