What is the VPN "wg0" quick settings button supposed to do?

GNOME Shell shows a prominent button named after my WireGuard interface:

When I click it, this happens:

Notification reading “Activation of network connection failed”

and then my WireGuard peers become unreachable, despite wg still showing that the interface is connected.

What is GNOME Shell trying to do here?

It’s supposed to disconnect you from the VPN. Clearly that’s broken. You’ll want to report a bug.
