Understanding File Indexing for 'Recent Files' in GNOME

Hello everyone!

I’m trying to understand how GNOME indexes files for the ‘Recent Files’ feature. What criteria does GNOME use to decide which files appear in this list? Is there a way to customize this feature to better suit individual workflows?

When an app creates/saves or opens a file, it is added at the top of the Recent Files list.
