Sort files by extension in Nautilus

Hi there, is it the right forum for feature requests on Nautilus?

On Nautilus 46.2 (Using Ubuntu 24.04) I can’t sort by file extension, only by file detailed type. I have lots of files of the same detailed type (Plain text document) but differing extensions (.txt, .tile, .tiling, .tileset) and they are henceforth not sortable with the current Nautilus.

Hi. You are in the right place for feature suggestions. (Not “requests” since there is no customer contract.)

That’s interesting. Should they really be the same detailed type? Maybe we are missing detailed types for these extensions. I know .txt but not .tile, .tiling nor .tileset. Where can I learn more about these extensions?

A solution is to add MIME types for these extensions. For an example of how to do that see here: XDG MIME Applications - ArchWiki

Once the files have a MIME type they can be sorted in Nautilus on type.
