If a portion of a drawing (photograph) is cropped and saved as a xcf file it appears to save the cropped object. However, when the xcf file is inserted as a file back into the original drawing the entire drawing is inserted not just the xcf file. The only to insert the cropped drawing is to save it as a jpg file before inserting into the original drawing (photograph). An xcf file could be inserted in earlier versions of GIMP. I would like to see that option restored in future versions of GIMP.
I think what you are really saying is that when you crop an image, the pixels you cropped away are still in the image but hidden. This depends on the option Delete Cropped Pixels in the tool Options dock for the crop tool. You can use image/crop to content, or image/flatten image, to throw away those extra pixels, or use the crop tool with the optop to delete enabled (and not just “current layer only”), before saving. This also results in a smaller save file. But then you can’t get the pixels back later.
