Request for Proposals: Digital Wellbeing Frontend

The Digital Wellbeing project is looking for a contractor to work on the Parental Controls frontend and integration.

Required Experience and Knowledge

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in:

  • Ability to independently deliver technical work on schedule
  • Ability to resolve project constraints (time, technical implementation, and meaningful UI) to create a cohesive user experience
  • Familiarity with the GNOME technology stack (D-Bus, Control Center, Settings, etc.)
  • Experience in creating GTK/Libadwaita user interfaces and/or GNOME Shell development work
  • C programming

Project Scope & Timeline

Project deliverables are to include an updated Parental Controls app UI (see source code) and integration of parental controls into the GNOME Shell lock screen. Candidates can apply to deliver one of these goals or both.

Candidates should be available to work full or part-time from 23 June to 14 August 2025.

Individual hourly rates are to be paid at $45–55 USD, subject to negotiation.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from individuals and teams. We strongly encourage candidates from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, as well as those who are not already employed full-time in this space.

Application Requirements

To apply, please send an application email to wellbeing@gnome.org before June 18th, 2025, including:

  • an introduction to yourself and/or your team
  • some details of your relevant previous work in this domain
  • your availability during the stated project dates

Short applications of 100-200 words are welcome.

Additional Support

Support will be provided by the GNOME Foundation and GNOME Design Team throughout the project. The existing team working on Digital Wellbeing, Philip Withnall and Sam Hewitt, can advise on technical and design requirements and how to integrate with the existing work on screen and app time limits.
