Hello everyone,
First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the contributors and developers who work tirelessly to make GNOME a fantastic desktop environment. Your efforts are truly appreciated by the community.
I am facing an issue with document handling that I hope someone can help me with. I am using GNOME on Debian 12 with X11, and I have encountered a frustrating behavior with how documents are opened across different workspaces.
Here’s a specific example of what happens:
I am on Workspace 2, where I have gedit open with some text files.
I switch to Workspace 1, where I have other programs running.
When I return to Workspace 2 and double-click on a text file in the file manager, the system opens the file in the gedit instance that is active on Workspace 1.
This behavior is quite frustrating as it disrupts my workflow. Ideally, I would like the file to open in the gedit instance on the current active workspace. Additionally, if gedit is not already open on the current workspace, I would expect a new instance of gedit to open on that workspace.
The workspace environment is like a physical workspace. When I am working at a specific workspace, I expect the tools I need for that work to be available there. If I move to another workspace, I generally have different tools for different tasks.
I have not been able to find a solution to this issue so far. Could someone please guide me on how to configure GNOME to handle this situation better?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Gabriele.
