Is it possible to run Gnome applications WITHOUT Gnome 3 (DE)?

Is it possible to run Gnome applications WITHOUT Gnome 3 (DE)? I would like to use a very simple DE that uses GTK, instead of Gnome Shell. Those are the apps that I would like to keep:

  • baobab
  • eog (can be replaced by ranger or feh)
  • evince (maybe can be replaced by ranger or feh)
  • file-roller (find terminal-based alternative, maybe)
  • fractal
  • gnome-calendar
  • gnome-disk-utility
  • gnome-font-viewer (find terminal-based alternative, maybe)
  • nautilus

Using a different shell shouldn’t cause problems with those applications, as long as their dependencies are all installed. You might find that some integrations which work with GNOME Shell aren’t implemented in a third party shell.

You may find a few apps, like Settings (gnome-control-center), refuse to work but I’ve used all 9 you’ve listed outside GNOME fine
