How to edit labels?

Hello, all. I apologize in advance, because this seems like a common topic, but I couldn’t find any information under Help → Contents, and couldn’t find anything by searching this forum.

How can I edit the labels? I created one erroneously, and now I’d like to delete it.

On a related note, is the content available under Help → Contents the most detailed manual on Evolution (3.44.4) available? Is there another manual that contains the answer to my question?

Thanks for your advice and guidance.

Hi,

I also use Evolution. By “label”, is it the “Search Folders” (in the “Mail” component) ?

How did you create the label?

Perhaps do a right click on the label, there are often context menus to do lots of actions.

(BTW Evo is one of the biggest apps in GNOME, very useful and customizable! Thank you again to all its contributors).

Edit: read Milan’s answer below  He’s the expert. I mixed labels and search folders because it’s useful to create a search folder for a label.

Hi,

it’s in Edit->Preferences->Mail Preferences->Labels, if you mean mail
labels, which I guess you do.

is the content available under Help → Contents the most detailed
manual on Evolution (3.44.4) available?

It depends, if you’ve also installed the help file, thus the content is
not opened in a web browser, then you’ve an accurate manual for your
version. As the user documentation is updated with the code changes
(writing about new features and such), then the latest online manual
might not fit your version.

Is there another manual that contains the answer to my question?

This is tricky. Evolution is supposed to open an online manual for the
used version of it, but this stopped working since some build changes
due to infrastructure obstacles, which are not addressed yet, thus the
place Evolution currently points to is outdated:
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/

There is a staged version of the manual, a work in progress by the
infrastructure, at:
https://infrastructure.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/help.gnome.org/evolution/index.html
When it’ll replace the old pages I do not know.

The section related to mail labels is here:
https://infrastructure.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/help.gnome.org/evolution/mail-labels.html
accessed through Sorting and organizing mail->Using labels (search for
“label” on the pages).

This part did not change for a long time, thus it’s part of the
outdated documentation as well:
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/mail-labels.html.en

Glancing through that version, I see:

https://infrastructure.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/help.gnome.org/evolution/problems-getting-help.html

which references the old mailing list, but not the new one or the
Discourse server.

Hi,
I do not see from that staging server when exactly they generated
the content the last time, but it is (also) outdated, because
the sources have the information updated:

Milan, thanks so much for your help. Sorry for not seeing it before now.

I have a question on the help file you mentioned. On my Ubuntu 22.04 system, I only have these packages that start with ‘evolution’:

$ apt-cache --names-only search "^evolution"
evolution-data-server - evolution database backend server
evolution-data-server-common - architecture independent files for Evolution Data Server
evolution-data-server-dev - Development files for evolution-data-server (metapackage)
evolution-data-server-doc - Documentation files for the Evolution Data Server libraries
evolution-common - architecture independent files for Evolution
evolution-data-server-tests - Installed tests for the evolution database backend server
evolution-dev - development library files for Evolution
evolution-ews - Exchange Web Services integration for Evolution
evolution-plugin-bogofilter - standard plugins for Evolution (bogofilter)
evolution-plugin-pstimport - standard plugins for Evolution (pstimport)
evolution-plugin-spamassassin - standard plugins for Evolution (spamassassin)
evolution-plugins - standard plugins for Evolution
evolution-plugins-experimental - experimental plugins for Evolution
evolution-rss - Evolution RSS Reader Plugin
evolution - groupware suite with mail client and organizer
$

Which one contains the help file? There’s no ‘evolution-doc’ package, only one for the evolution-data-server. I have these evolution modules installed:

$ apt list --installed | grep evolution | cut -f1 -d"/"
evolution-common
evolution-data-server-common
evolution-data-server
evolution-plugin-bogofilter
evolution-plugin-pstimport
evolution-plugins
evolution
libevolution
$

Thanks, again, so much for your help.

It seems Ubuntu doesn’t package help files into a separate package (I’d expect evolution-help, which uses Fedora):
https://packages.ubuntu.com/source/jammy-updates/evolution

Checking list of the files I see the /usr/share/help/*/evolution/... files are part of the evolution-common package.

Thanks so much for checking that out.
