How to create a custom timeline widget?

Hello, I want to give my slideshow maker software started in 2009 a timeline widget like the one in Olive or Shotcut. Shall I inherit from GtkDrawing or GtkIconview? Which one is easier? My software is here for anyone interested: http://imagination.sourceforge.net/

Have you thought about looking at existing software written in GTK that has a timeline widget, like PiTiVi?
