How light/dark style works?

How light/dark style technically works? How is this standardized in freedesktop.org?

I see key /org/gnome/desktop/interface/color-scheme that can contain default, prefer-light or prefer-dark. Path is org.gnome* so it’s hardly standardized by freedesktop.org?

The org.gnome.desktop GSettings key is an implementation detail.

There is a GNOME Initiative about the light/dark styles, which contains a lot of technical details.

Can you provide link to the standard of this by freedesktop.org?
Where is standard place for style info? $XDG_STYLE or something environment variable? Or $XDG_CONFIG/style.conf file? Or?
Why the key is org.gnome.interface.? Why not system.interface. or org.freedesktop.interface.?
