How does single-application mode work?

Hi ,
I have found a document about how to configure single-application mode. but I am not quiet understand how does this work, what the step is when gnome read those configure file? how to run my application?

gdm launches gnome-session; gnome-session launches the shell and your app

Step 4 tells gdm how to launch gnome-session

Step 6 tells gnome-session what app(s) to launch
