I want to be able to hibernate the system from the Gnome Display Manager’s status menu. However, the only option under “Power off” is “Suspend”. This means I need to log in with an account just to hibernate.
This has been reported as an issue in 2013, but hasn’t received any responses.
As a workaround, in 2011 someone suggested creating a keyboard shortcut for the GDM user that triggers hibernation. This seems to be an Ubuntu-specific workaround, doesn’t seem to work any longer (not even if I change the the GDM user in the command to the specific one found on my system), and it’s not an actual solution.
The Hibernate Status Button shell extension makes the menu item available when logged in, but not for the GDM.
Can anyone recommend a way to add Hibernate to the GDM’s menu?
