[GnomeCommander] Help wanted porting away from Gtk2

Hi all,

Gnome Commander still uses Gtk2. It would be a great achievement to upgrade the sources to use Gtk3 (or even 4). Unfortunately, as the maintainer of Gnome Commander I am not the expert in Gtk programming, nor I have the time to first learn Gtk2 and then learning how to port away to Gtk3. (You have to know that I maintain Gnome Commander not from the beginning…)

That’s why I’m calling for help on the transition from Gtk2 to Gtk3.

There exists an open issue for getting rid of Gtk2. If anyone has the knowledge, time and motivation for helping out in the transition, this would be awesome. Spread the word if you know anyone who could help.

Thanks a lot
Uwe

PS: There are plans in certain Linux distributions to remove Gtk2 apps. Currently Gnome Commander would be one of the victims.

In the meantime, Gnome Commander could be packaged as a container (with Flatpak, or Snap, etc) with GTK 2 bundled with the app.

But of course using GTK 3 or 4 would be better.
