GNOME Nepal : Journey Of A Community In Inspiring Future Generation On Open Source

2024 has been a year of learning, collaboration, and empowerment for GNOME Nepal. Through a series of training sessions and instructional events, we have engaged with students across various institutions, introducing them to the power of open source, Linux, and the GNOME desktop environment. Here’s a look at our impactful training journey:

April 19: Linux Talk with GNOME Nepal Inauguration

GNOME Nepal officially launched in collaboration with Kathmandu University Open Source Community (KUOSC). This event set the foundation for our mission, highlighting the significance of Linux and GNOME in the open-source ecosystem.

June 6: Linux Customization Training Session

In collaboration with KUOSC, we conducted a training session on Linux customization with the GNOME desktop environment. Participants explored GNOME’s powerful features and learned how to personalize their Linux experience.

July 16: Training at St. Xavier’s College

We held a dedicated training session at St. Xavier’s College, focusing on problem-solving and Linux customization with GNOME, helping students enhance their technical skills. This was an innovative session because it was laptopless. As 90 % of students didn’t have Linux on their machine, we tried to teach them about everything in a laptopless session, with the help of chart papers and interactive games. We showed them through our machines, that GNOME eases the experience in day-to-day uses.

This was our first dedicated session and 50 interested participants attended the session of 3 hours duration.

August 11: Training at Yeti International College

Students at Yeti International College were introduced to open-source, Linux, and GNOME. The session encouraged participation and curiosity in the open-source movement.

This time the session was of 1.5 hours duration and 25 + students were in attendance.

August 14: Training at Nepal Kasthamandap College

Another milestone was achieved as we introduced open source, Linux, and GNOME to students at Nepal Kasthamandap College, broadening our reach and impact.

This time the session duration was of 1.5 hours and 40 + students attended our session.

September 5: Introductory Session at Kathmandu College of Central State

We continued our educational efforts with an introductory session at Kathmandu College of Central State, bringing new learners into the open-source community.

This session was of 1 hour of duration and 35 + students attended our session.

November 16 & 23: Training at Kathmandu Engineering College

We conducted two training sessions at Kathmandu Engineering College, educating students on the fundamentals of open source, Linux, and GNOME.

This was the first time we were able to provide fully practical sessions to the students. We took help with the college computer club to help students have Linux in their machines so that we could provide them with complete hands-on knowledge.

This time the sessions divided into two days went up to 7 hours in total. The participation of the attendees was more than 50.

November 29: Training at Kantipur Engineering College

Our final training session of the year took place at Kantipur Engineering College, inspiring more students to explore the possibilities of open-source technologies.

Again, this session was fully hands-on. Again the college computer club helped the students with the Linux installation in their machines and we were able to give practical sessions to the students.

This session duration was 3 + hours.

Looking Ahead

GNOME Nepal’s journey in 2024 has been one of education, engagement, and empowerment. With UbuCon Asia 2025 in Kathmandu on the horizon, we are committed to continuing our efforts in fostering an inclusive and thriving open-source community. Here’s to an even more impactful future!

Thank you so much @kristiprogri , this wouldn’t have been possible without all the help and support you have provided since the GNOME Asia in Nepal.
