The goal of GNOME shell isn’t necessarily to be different for the sake of being different. GNOME has a set of concise design principles, which enables designers and developers to take a step back and think: «Is this really the best way to do things? Can it be improved upon?» This leads to a desktop that isn’t similar to other desktops for the sake of being similar, but instead encourages a workflow motivated by newer design ideas and other goals than the ones the people beind the «traditional» desktop metaphor had.
