Gmail doesn’t provide the “less secure apps” option anymore, so OAuth via Gnome Online Accounts is the only way to connect Geary to it. The main Wiki page for Geary still suggests changing settings and links to the FAQ entry which describes both the settings change along with the 2FA+app password and Online Accounts approaches.
