Funding for GNOME

Hi,

It looks like GNOME is looking for funding.

We are a small company and we use Linux+GNOME on all of our computers. We can give around $50,000 to GNOME but we also need something in return.

Currently, we are using GNOME Flashback Metacity because we like menus. So, if GNOME brings back the top menu bar in their default interface then we can give funding to GNOME. We don’t want to install any extensions.

An advice: If GNOME contacts companies that use Linux on their desktops/laptops and understand what they want and then if GNOME folks implement those things, then I think that GNOME will get a lot of funding.

Regards.

Are you talking about that?

Prove it. You have to understand that it’s a bit much, to pay $50M, just for that…

@ebassi Someone is coming back to the charge.

It looks like you didn’t read my post properly.

I said $50K and not $50M.

You have to understand that you should read posts properly.

Still $50K just for a bar? Good luck and I hope they haven’t purged that piece of code yet

That’s not going to happen.

You’re free to fork GNOME Shell and put a menu in the top panel by reusing some extension code as the basis, and you’re free to re-distribute the changes—as long as you do not call it “GNOME”.

There was never “a piece of code” in the first place, but if there were then it would still be available in the history of the project.

That’s fine. No funding to GNOME then. We don’t want to give free money to GNOME so that GNOME people can fulfill their ambitions.

By the way, looking at the attitude of GNOME people, I won’t be surprised if GNOME closes down in a few years because of lack of funding.

Good thing that GNOME is a volunteer-run project, and does not rely on funding except for hosting and infrastructure.

You should take advantage of the licensing terms of GNOME, instead of trying to bribe somebody into changing the direction of a project to suit your taste.

I’ll do it for $60,000 with a 50% retainer. Please post your company’s details and where to send my invoice. Once payment is received, I’ll begin work.

Thanks.

We can do this ourselves but that’s not the point.

It looks like you didn’t read my post properly. I said - ““So, if GNOME brings back the top menu bar in their default interface then we can give funding.””.

This means that the design of the user interface of GNOME should change permanently.

We don’t want your extension/changes.

We want GNOME to bring back top menu bar permanently in all their distributions and should never remove it in future and then we will give funding to “”““GNOME””“”, and not to an individual or a group of people.

By the way, the norm in this world is that first you work and then you get paid. It looks like you want to get paid first and then you want to start the work. So, you are going against the norm of this world and that probably won’t be good for you.

You want to undo 15 years of development. It’s safe to say that what you want is not going to happen, and you should find a different desktop environment for your uses.
