Feature Request: Add “Autostart” section to Gnome settings app and require users to manually add a program or script to crontab

Would it be a good idea to require users to manually add a program or script to crontab, either through the gnome settings app or the terminal? Adding a program to crontab could trigger a sudo or Polkit prompt. Some users might not want a non-root program or script to automatically add itself to crontab. Malware often silently adds entries this way. This could help protect Linux users. There could also be an option to disable this feature.

You seem to have a large number of misconceptions about security attack vectors and common user scenarios.

How many of these threads are you going to keep spamming here?

This feature does not exist. Nor should it.

We have discussed this in a different form, using the Background Portal since autostart apps should by design startup on the background. There are some UX things to iron out before we jump into implementing this. See App settings: add autostart permission (#69) · Issues · Teams / Design / settings-mockups · GitLab
