I’m having a problem with Evolution freezing while downloading emails from Gmail via imap.gmail.com. I think this problem is caused by too many emails, and when the different folders are added to the “All” folder, it creates a download problem and conflicts, or something similar. In the tests I’ve been running to get Evolution working again, the downloads started working again when I deleted emails, but they only appeared in the “All” folder. The emails don’t appear in inbox, spam, sent, or other subfolders I created. Only as I deleted them did they appear in the different subfolders.
This is the problem I’ve encountered, and from searching for others, I’ve found no solution. I’m leaving it here in case it helps someone or some programmer solve the problem.
Hi,
I do not see this problem here, neither I recall a bug report about any
similar problem (maybe I forgot about it, it can be too).
When you say freezing, what do you mean with that precisely, please?
The app itself is not frozen, is it? As there many pending operations
in the status bar, some about “Retrieving messages…”? If there are a
lot of pending jobs, then a backtrace of the application, with
debuginfo packages for the evolution-data-server and evolution itself
installed, would help to identify what it is waiting for.
Anyway, your evolution is kinda older. The current stable series is
version 3.56.x, with the latest version 3.56.2. I know some long term
support (LTS) distributions do not update their apps, they focus on
stability. The Flatpak is a good option for such cases. It has its
limitations, but it’s better than completely malfunctioning apps. You
can try Evolution from the flathub.org site, if you wish: Install Evolution on Linux | Flathub
Using GNOME on openSUSE Leap 15.6 there was an update for Chromium a few days back, since the update each time tried to sign in it the system freezes which requires turn power off then to reboot.
Each time did reboot, then tried to open Chromium it freezed.
With Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS when I reboot the Chromium problem is working ok.
Hi, it’s true that only IMAP file downloads and server directory downloads freeze. I don’t have Chromium installed either. Based on what you’re telling me about the version, I’m going to see if I can compile the latest version for Mageia. I’d appreciate knowing where to download it. I think it could be a version issue. Thanks for the information.
Hi,
you are better to use precompiled version, like the Flatpak version
from Flathub.org ( Install Evolution on Linux | Flathub ), in
case your distro cannot provide you new-enough code. It has its
limitations, but it fits these use cases well. It’s also isolated from
the system data, thus whatever you’ll do in the Flatpak version will
not be seen in the package version.
Also, building Evolution from the sources is not easy (many
dependencies, some shared with the rest of the system):
You can build the flatpak version locally, if you prefer:
