Did a search on a list in Calendar - ever since Evolution opens on that page and is totally frozen.
I’ve tried reinstalling, uninstalling and reinstalling but no joy. It still opens on the list calendar page and nothing works.

Reinstalling Evolution (as with any software on Linux) is almost
certainly a waste of time. This isn’t Windows.
As a test, you can try Evolution under a different user account on your
local machine. If it works, the problem is related to something in your
configuration, which is under your own account and not replaced when
you reinstall the app.
If you want help with this, you need to at least say what version of
Evolution you have (especially if it’s a Flatpak) and what kind of
accounts are configured.

Hi. Evolution is version 3.52.3-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 24.04.
It seems it’s only the calendar that’s a problem. If I right-click on the icon and choose “Mail” then it opens up as normal without freezing, until I click on Calendar!
Hi,
could you try to install debuginfo packages (I think they are called
“dbg” in Ubuntu) for the evolution-data-server and evolution and then
get a backtrace of the frozen “evolution” process, please? You can get
the backtrace with a command like this:
$ gdb --batch --ex "t a a bt" --pid=`pidof evolution` &>bt.txt
Please check the bt.txt for any private information, like passwords,
email addresses, server addresses,… I usually search for “pass” at
least (quotes for clarity only), before sharing it anywhere.
That may show what it is trying to do.
The ~/.config/evolution/calendar/ contains configuration options for
the Calendar view. Being this anyhow related to an ongoing search or
anything like that, you can try to rename that directory and then start
Evolution, to try whether it’ll help. I really mean to rename the
directory, not to delete it, because if it’s still present in the
current stable version it could help to reproduce the problem, but it
really depends what the problem is, because it can be it had been fixed
meanwhile (your version had been released on 2024-06-28).
Bye,
Milan
Looks like that did the job. Many thanks!
It would be good to know what Evolution tried to do that it froze the
app. You know, to fix it, if it’s still a problem in the current
version.
Changed the Calendar view to “List”.
Hi,
I see, the List View is very simple, it just shows all the events in
the selected calendar. I use it from time to time in the latest
version (3.58.x series) with no problem. I think there was filled some
issue in the past, but I do not recall any detail neither I cannot find
it, unfortunately, thus maybe my memory is simply bad.
Anyway, you managed to restore the Evolution to a usable state, which
is good. We can try to find the root cause of the problem if you’d be
able to reproduce with a more recent version than 3.52.x series.
Thanks and bye,
Milan
The version of Evolution is what comes with Ubuntu 24.04 - how do I upgrade to the latest version ov Evolution?
Either install the latest Flatpak version of Evolution, or ask your distribution as upgrading is distribution-specific.
