I actually just wanted to donate, and expected a btc address in order to donate using Bitcoin.
Instead it looks like a need to install (another) app called bitpay.
Is there any reason there is no direct address?

Yes. We are required to identify all our donors, and also to not accept donations from embargoed countries.
