Gimp does not write geotiff tags, so you will lose the information when saving the file.

when saving .TIFFs, yet issues like Issues · GNOME / GIMP · GitLab make me wonder whether it does, and if so, why I’ve not the option.
The main GIMP issue you reference (5651) is closed, and if you read through it you will see that GeoTIFF support was added since version 2.10.20. The first post you reference is from 2006, way before this was added to GIMP.
