I think the weekly e-mail feature doesn’t benefit most users, who however find it enabled by default. I think e-mails should never be sent until necessary (reply to a thread etc.) unless the user wants to opt in.

The feedback I’ve had is that it’s a well received feature. If we turned it off by default and made it opt-in, I think it would be much less discoverable, as it wouldn’t be clear what the Activity Summary actually is.
Individual users can turn it off (or change the frequency) in their preferences:
Also, it’s worth noting that those who only ever interact with Discourse by email (ie: those who treat it like a mailing list) won’t receive these mails.
