Difficulty accessing Gitlab through proof-of-work/Anubis

Hello all,

For some reason my main Firefox profile has been stuck calculating for about 30 minutes now (it says “Difficulty: 4”), but going through incognito mode or Chrome works fine in a few seconds, and even Fennec on Android finishes in 20-30s, all from the same IP.

  • Is there a configuration switch somewhere that makes the challenge extra hard to solve for my main profile? I tried disabling uBO to no avail.
  • I do have an account but I’m currently not logged-in as far as I know, is it be possible to have a reduced challenge by logging-in? If so, where do I access the log-in page?

Please keep Anubis or similar up until there’s better solutions available, Gnome has finite resources and none to spare to LLM scrapers who won’t respect anything. I’m just one occasional visitor, minor inconveniences are okay — and I do have a workaround by switching to another browser.

If you use any extension or setting that can disable WebWorkers (like JShelter), that seems to silently break Anubis.

Thanks for replying! I don’t, as far as I know. I tried a site for testing web workers and it seems to be working fine: I see web workers appear and disappear in the Firefox JS debugger panel.

Back when Anubis was still letting me try on my main profile (now it just rejects it without even starting the challenge — other profiles/browsers still work fine) I remember it was also occupying 1 CPU core at 100% for 1 or 2 hours before I stopped it, so at least I’m fairly sure it started something like a web worker, even if the worker may not be able to communicate back?

What is your user-agent?

Damn it, I feel dumb, I think that was it. I was 100% sure I hadn’t modified it and didn’t think to look… but I had installed a UA switcher extension a long time ago and apparently forgot to reset it, so it advertised a version of Chrome that probably went slowly out of sync with the recent releases…

Sorry for the noise!
