I’m catching up on release policies, especially backports and have a related translation question. Someone kindly confirmed that string changes should not be backported, however I’m fairly behind on a point release for gnome-online-accounts.
Is there a trick or some advice how to get the translations up to date, without inadvertently backporting a a string change?
There is no trick. There is a rule: developers should never touch po files.

I believe so, yes 
I’m doing some catch up and I believe I missed the obvious time to branch. I’m guessing if contributors can update translations for the last stable branch, they will do so.
