Windows 11 has recently adopted a battery icon style that has long been used by others, including Xiaomi’s HyperOS, Android 15, and—by a long stretch—Apple (who I believe started the trend, which MIUI later copied—oops).
Anyway, here’s the link to the Windows 11 icon I’m referring to:
What are the benefits of this setup?
More expressive battery modes.
Clearer visual distinction between battery levels.
Overall, it just looks better. The current indicator looks squashed—even Yaru has a better-looking battery icon.
I’ve tried making the changes myself, but I believe St.Icon is limiting my ability to use custom dimensions. I experimented with a 16x24 or 16x20 (portrait) layout. The best I could do was set it to 24x24 or 20x20 and hope the top and bottom portions of the icon don’t get clipped.
It would indeed be useful to distinguish more states, especially with the recent introduction of the “Preserve Battery Health” setting in GNOME (the icon when the battery is at 80% and plugged is currently ambiguous, for instance).
