Writing code isn’t the only way to help

GNOME is an amazing project, but it can be really hard for new developers to jump in and start contributing. Writing code isn’t the only way to help the community grow — creating tutorials, videos, and documentation can be just as impactful (if not more).

we see new apps being created and then abandoned a few months later. Instead, imagine if experienced GNOME developers co-authored books, wrote in-depth guides, or published courses that would empower others to become contributors and maintainers themselves.

Just record your screen while building and explain how to use the existing tools and libraries. Every developer could easily create a short playlist about a specific topic, and that would make a huge difference for newcomers.

Maybe the GNOME Foundation could even support or fund such initiatives.

I’m saying this after feeling overwhelmed while trying to build my first GNOME app in Python.

So here’s my plea: please write more docs, books, and tutorials.
They’re crucial — and deeply strategic — for the long-term health of the GNOME community.

Maybe your next contribution could be a playlist tutorial instead of coding a new app.

I’m currently documenting my own learning journey so I can contribute back in this way as a small way to give back to this great community.
