Will the old plugins be back in gedit 48-49-50?

Hi there! I am Eduardo and i am a big fan of gedit, I mainly use it to code and write my diary.
Recently I installed version 48, jumping from 44. (debian 13 from debian 12). What I have found is that many plugins are not available any more, and the git repos show that from version 45 and on some plugins are not available.
@swilmet ¿Will the old plugins ever come back? Thank you for your best effort in maintaining this precious old piece of software.

Cheers. Eduardo.

I’m not sure myself what to do about these plugins.

In an ideal world, no features should be removed. But some plugins didn’t work anymore so it requires time to fix the issues. Since I don’t even use myself some of these plugins, it was easier to remove them in the hope that someone else would take the code, fix it and maintain it as a third-party plugin.

Then some updates (from pygobject and girepository) made all Python plugins broken. This is not visible in Debian 13 because an older version of pygobject is shipped there (the same currently with the Flathub version).

So it’s too early to say whether all these plugins are definitely gone or not. It’s not too late to bring them back if the Python general issue is fixed. On the other hand, it would be more code for me to maintain again, and Python is not my favorite language. Although I’m aware that these plugins bring valuable features to the application, making it a more useful and appreciated piece of software.

Next version of gedit will be released when Ready, so a decision will be made in the coming months. I plan to take time to think again about all this.
