Why doesn't GIMP have more drawing tools, such as Mixbrush, Texture Brush, Dual Brush, etc., like Photoshop or Clip Studio?

Look, I think GIMP has great potential in terms of digital art, but it seems like they don’t want to expand its capabilities any further. If I could contribute, I would, but I don’t have much knowledge about how the code works, and I’m afraid it’s difficult (I think I’ve answered the question). But the issue is clear: I would love to have more options when it comes to bringing my vision to the canvas. I’ll keep an eye out for news on this topic and sincerely hope it becomes a reality. I love GIMP, but it needs more.

As you say, you’ve answered yourself.

Anyway GIMP is fully community-made. That means basically that each time you ask a question about GIMP, you can replace “they” by “I”. Let me try :stuck_out_tongue::

it seems like they don’t want to expand its capabilities any further

… should actually read:

it seems like I don’t want to expand its capabilities any further

Because yeah everyone is more than welcome to join and contribute. Any of us just started because we had an itch to scratch too. So yeah, we don’t bite and any helping hands are welcome. :hugs:

You may also notice with this change how this kind of wording may be perceived as unnecessarily offensive once it is addressed to you, since it transforms a fact (not having as many brush engines as some other software) into a prediction of what someone else’s might be thinking. I.e. making us the “bad guys”. :imp:

Anyway as you say yourself, no, the reason is just that it’s actual work which will take quite some time to implement and even more time to get it into a “stable” state. It’s doable, yet still hard work, and we all have our own priorities too, which we want to handle first.
It is still explicitly in our roadmap: GIMP Developer - Roadmaps

So yes, we do in fact want to improve painting. In my case, painting with GIMP is even part of my job (well, not me who is painting, I’m on the technical side of the job), so having better painting tools for future project is something we’d love. And I may tackle some of this huge task someday though I do have a lot of other and more important tasks to do first.

I apologise if it was offensive, truly. I am pleased to see that you are still interested in improving that aspect. I sincerely hope it will be soon (if not, the wait will be worth it), but as I also said, I cannot contribute due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. All I can do is observe the magnificent progress and share it through my art .

No prob. It’s just that there are so many weird rumors about GIMP contributors. And it usually starts with someone stating a “they don’t want […]”, or “they don’t like […]” or whatever other “they [… something something…]”. Then it gets repeated ad vitam æternam as some obvious fact. And it’s a bit tiring. :weary:

Truth is that we are just normal people and “we” could just be anyone. Because really I meant it when I said that the GIMP team is extremely welcoming to new contributors.

I am pleased to see that you are still interested in improving that aspect.

Personally I absolutely am. Digital painting is a very very important aspect in what we do.

I sincerely hope it will be soon (if not, the wait will be worth it)

Sure. Well… don’t hold your breath, but who knows… some features just very suddenly popped up when some new contributor deeply interested in said feature just came in.

All it takes for most features is someone willing to take the time to implement it (and complex features often means weeks of involved coding so obviously it’s not a small thing when someone decides to give out such amount of their free time to the world; hence it doesn’t happen every day to get new contributors, but when it happens we can have cool unexpected surprises).

Anyway thanks for the encouragement! :love_letter:
