Who though user desktop-selection being stored per-machine was a good idea?

Once the username has been entered, the login screen can look up the home directory for that user and read the needed info from the ~/.dmrc file. This is how things used to be done. Now, once it has obtained the username, it looks up that info in the /var/lib/AccountsService/users/ file – similar issue. The only issue mentioned that might interfere w/ this is having the user’s home directory be encrypted and only decodable once the user has entered their password. But is anyone currently doing this? And even then, selecting the default desktop session could be deferred until after the password has been entered and accepted.
