I presume that, with the switch to Wayland, the X Session Management Protocol is no longer being used. What has taken its place?
Is being able to restore sign-out conditions on sign-in a goal of the gnome project anymore?

XSMP support went away a long time ago, I think before GNOME 3? Certainly long before Wayland.
Philip has been working on a new way of doing app save/restore. There is some info on this here.
Also see here for progress on the wayland side: staging: Add xdg-session-management protocol (!18) · Merge requests · wayland / wayland-protocols · GitLab
I also went away a long time ago, before GNOME 3.
Thanks for the updates.
