Hi, ive used GIMP for a while to create stencils. But ive had an idea which would make my job infinitely easier but i cant work out how to do it.
So, ive broken my image down into 5 layers using ‘duplicate layer’ and on each layer i use ‘threshold’, each layer shows a little bit more of the image. Ive then coloured each image so when they are all layered on top of each other i can distinguish layers by colour when stacked up.
But when i try and view them all at once i can only see the one layer. Hope this makes sense. Please see the photos. Thanks in advance
What you want to play with is the dropdown menu next to “Mode: Normal” - you’ll see that there are quite a few options. At the moment, with Mode: Normal, the topmost layer, if it has no mask and opacity is 100% is the only thing you’ll see. To experiment, make only two layers visible by clicking on the “eye” next to the remaining layers to “turn them off.” Now click on the top most layer and click on the dropdown menu button on the Mode: line at the right. You should be able to use your arrow key to move down the list. Watch what happens - you’ll see the layer below the top layer begin to show through. If my testing is correct, the mode you want is “Addition” for the top layers, leave the bottom one on Normal.
I tested by opening an image, using GMIC to split the image into its RGB components as separate layers, then setting the Mode of the Red and Green layers to Addition. I can Shift-Click on the Eye of the original to turn off visibility of the three RGB layers, then Shift-Click it again to turn their visibility back on. I cannot see a difference in the original and the three RGB layers.
