Hi, Every time i copy a password or a username from Bitwarden i get an unwanted “remote desktop " screen with 2 choices: “allow remote interactions” and “allow clipboard access”.”
But the fact is that i do not use remote desktop at all.
So i listed all services (systemctl list-units --type=service), then i switched off this remote desktop service: (systemctl stop --user gnome-remote-desktop.service) and i restarted my machine (ubuntu LTS 24.04).
But this unwanted screen still appears after copying a password in Bitwarden as a result of which i cannot use this password or any password at all anymore.
Then i removed the service at startup: (sudo systemctl disable gnome-remote-desktop.service) and i checked if its has gone (systemctl list-units --type=service).
After the next restart the problem still persists: this “remote desktop” screen still appears when copying a password from Bitwarden.
So I have to type all passwords by hand.
Do i have a virus or am i been hacked? I do not know anymore. What can i do best?
I am an average user of Linux because a hate Windows, not an advanced user.
Help very appreciated.
Wyl.
This is not a virus. This is Bitwarden trying to be clever.
For security reasons GNOME doesn’t allow arbitrary applications to fake keyboard input or access the clipboard at any time even without direct user interaction with that application. Bitwarden wants to do one or both of those things (to “type” in the password directly into an input field? to clear the clipboard after some timeout? I don’t know, I don’t use Bitwarden), and it likely pretends to be a program implementing remote desktop access, since that’s the only way GNOME would allow it to control these things (if the user approves).
I saw some discontent about this on Mastodon recently, but I don’t have any links handy.
So, Bitwarden calls a removed service? What coud i do about this?
Never mind. I stop using Bitwarden and i’ll use keepass from now on. I think the best thing i can do.
I want to thank you very much for your efforts to answer my question. Now i am reassured. I don’t have a virus… Pfffff.
