Show Flatpak package name in app settings

Sometimes it’s necessary to know the package name (like org.gnome.Calculator) for a flatpak application. Maybe you want to run it in the terminal to debug an issue, or you might want to set permissions for it. Whatever the reason, it’s useful to know it.

Currently the only way to find it in gnome is either

  • use flatpak list and look thought the giant output
  • find the .desktop file and look at its exec line

I really think it would be nice to have that name visible in the settings page of the app, simmilar to android. It would be useful, and wouldn’t really disturb anyone who doesn’t know what it is.

Here is 2 mockups of what this could look like:

The first one is more visible, with a label of what it is

The second one is more like what android does, small text on the bottom for whoever is looking for it

As i was writing this, i was told the package name can be seen in gnome software under safety…? I was actively looking for it and i couldn’t find it, which is a pretty clear sign that it’s a very bad placment for it.

These entries are actually clickable. You can see app id under “Potentially unsafe” (in this case). (not trying to disagree with you, just throwing this out there)

yes, this is what i meant in the last part.

I was actively looking for it and couldn’t find it. I have no idea how those app details are related to safety, and it’s a very bad placment.
