Select file by drag and drop in nautilus file picker/chooser

Hi everyone, please excuse me if this is not the correct category.

I am running Gnome 49 and ever since the default file picker changed from the old GTK one to nautilus (correct me if I’m wrong about this) the ability to select a file in the dialogue box by dragging and dropping it from another application disappeared.

This was especially useful for me since I frequently have to upload single images via the file picker that I have already opened in an image viewer on the side. On earlier versions of Gnome and still on KDE, if you dragged any file into the file picker it would navigate to the containing folder and select the file in question.

Maybe I am missing something here, but I have not been able to find any information about this or any way to achieve something similar on newer versions of gnome.

Hi, welcome to the GNOME Discourse!

Its correct that Nautilus now provides the file chooser instead of GTK.

The new file chooser by Nautilus apparently still has a drop target in the lower bar (under the file list), but it’s true that it doesn’t work like with the GTK file chooser anymore.

However, there is a new design for improving the drop target, so this might be changed at some point.

So, this issue is known. You can see more information in the issue tracker of Nautilus:

Thanks for the quick reply!

I did indeed not know about the fact that there was a drop target, happy to hear that this is already being worked on. I also noticed that dropping something from gThumb for example does not work, while doing the same from loupe works fine, but I guess I’ll check on the gitlab if that’s new information or not.

Hi, just to be clear on expectations, this being a known issue doesn’t mean it’s being worked on. Someone will have to write the code for it.
