Remote Login connection troubles and authentication issues

I have been trying to setup a machine headless using remote login, but it’s not quite working and I can’t understand what’s the issue. I cannot connect using the credentials I set in Remote Login settings, but I can connect through a different account and login to my user account. However I get lots of nuisance authorization prompts for my password and now there’s an extra user account on the machine I don’t want. Further, I can no longer access Remote Login settings, they are locked and cannot be unlocked.

Machine H is the headless remote machine. It is running GNOME 49 on (Fedora 43). There is one user account, . I turned on Remote Login, created a user and password. When I connect from the local computer using Remmina, the connection is refused.

Then I tried the (excellent) instructions here: How to use Gnome Remote Desktop for headless login | BCarpent.codes . In these instructions, the credentials are set via CLI.

When it comes to creating a new user, I initially set credentials for . Connection is refused.

I then tried again, creating a new user account and RDP user credential for “rdp-user”. Now I can connect successfully and see the lock screen. However, now there are two accounts I can log into: , and “rdp-user”. If I log in to , I am asked for my password multiple times (1-3 times, depending). Additionally, I’m locked out of Remote Login settings as I mentioned. I also don’t want to see rdp-user, this is not a user account I want on my computer, if possible.

And yet, if I set the RDP credentials for and connect using that account, the connection is refused again. (Specifically, Remmina asks for a username and password, which is provided, buy not accepted, with no error).

What’s going on? I just want to make an RDP connection using and login to the remote machine as without all the nuisance password prompts.

Any insight is appreciated!

I am facing the same problem. Any clue on how to solve ?

Kind regards you all

Yeah, it’s related to polkit rules. By default, remote users need to authenticate when local users do not. You can edit or create new rules that include remote users. I had this running successfully for a while, but recently something happened to my system and the prompts started again. I’ve made a few attempts to make new rules, but I’m struggling to solve it this time. I also haven’t had much time to dig into it. I’m hoping future GNOME versions are better-tuned for remote users. In the meantime, I’m sure you’ll be able to solve your issues with some new polkit rules. Good luck!
