Proposal: Add quick access to Wi-Fi Hotspot in GNOME Quick Settings

Hi everyone,

I would like to discuss a possible improvement to accessing the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality in GNOME.

Currently, enabling or disabling a Wi-Fi hotspot requires navigating into the network settings/menu. For users who frequently use a hotspot, this takes several additional interactions compared with other commonly used system features available directly from Quick Settings.

I found an earlier GNOME Shell discussion about showing a hotspot status indicator in the top bar:

My proposal is slightly different. Rather than only displaying whether a hotspot is active, I would like to discuss whether GNOME could provide quicker access to enabling and disabling the Wi-Fi hotspot from Quick Settings.

I am not proposing a specific UI design, as I understand that any changes to GNOME’s core interface should follow the GNOME design process. I would mainly like to understand whether this is a useful problem to solve and what the appropriate UX might be.

For example, the functionality could potentially be accessible from the existing network controls rather than requiring navigation into deeper settings.

I would appreciate feedback from the community and design team.

Basically what I mean is adding a hotspot button here , rather than opening wifi and going in

I would love to work on this but not sure of the process , any help from anyone?

There is work in progress to make the quick settings more configurable:

Once implemented, it should be possible to add a hotspot switch.
