POLL: Should the titlebar button position be a preference in system settings?

Some users like the titlebar buttons to be placed on the left (like macOS). Some like them on the right (like Windows and default for GNOME).

The LibAdwaita toolkit handles this choice quite well automatically so, why not give users the choice between left and right in the GNOME Appearance settings?

What’s your opinion? Should GNOME’s Settings include this feature? Vote now!

Personally, I suggest that all the gnome interface customization options be scattered in gnome-control-center, and that gnome-tweaks / gnome-extensions and gdm-settings be brought together in an official application. So, there would be an application to manage the operation of the computer under the hood, another to manage the UI.

Currently I have switched from KDE & KDE Gear to GNOME since I found this solution. I’m on Fedora 41.

  • Yes for a “GNOME-UI” application.
  • Noooo!

GNOME really needs to compete with KDE in terms of customization… can’t wait for GNOME 48.

@CodedOre :fr: Pourquoi pensez-vous qu’il ne faut pas d’ application “Gnome-UI” ? est-ce la demande que ce soit une app officielle? :slightly_smiling_face:

:uk: Why do you think there is no need for a “Gnome-UI” application? Is this the request for this to be an official app?:slightly_smiling_face:

i think yes, in pointing&clicking, for example for people who can only use a tablet with one hand, because of trauma to the other side

(and i don’t think “would you use this” polls make sense to look at, they only tell “how many” would use this, and not “who” and “why”, especially when they’re on a tech enthusiast community which is not representative of most groups of people so the “how many” isn’t even accurate)

Ah, I am aware of this problem. We could bring all of this together in an application, pre-installed but hidden, with a link to said application in the settings. A bit like the “software updates” link:

So only experienced users would find it.

(I use the Papirus icon theme)

“preinstalled but hidden” still means “you need to maintain and support all of it”.

I mean, this was already discussed a lot. Gnome is clearly opinionated around a specific design, and rather than give all options, it tries to have good defaults.

Also, the apps for your desired changes already exist with Gnome Tweaks (or maybe Refine going forward).
If you want to change some unsupported options, the ways exists for those willing to experiment.

Which ones? I’m very interested in anything related to testing new software.
