OSK enter button not working (gnome-shell 3.38) - how to mitigate

I made the unfortunate decision to upgrade my systems from debian jessie and buster to newer distros.
In 2022 or so I shipped a system on debian bullseye with a touchscreen interface . Little did I know that the enter button on the onscreen keyboard was not working, as it is little used.

When the problem was brought to my attention a month ago, after hours and days trying to install alternate keyboards like caribou-antler hoping that would fix it with no effect, I bumped into this thread which confirms it’s a Gnome bug on X11.

What are my options here? Has the bug been fixed in newer versions of gnome-shell? Ideally I would be able to make this change remotely through OpenVPN on the command line.
Alternately, could I install a version of gnome-shell that predates 3.38 on debian bullseye without breaking things?

You will need to ask on a Debian support channel, because GNOME does not support a version of GNOME Shell released five years ago.

Sure. My question was more if the bug has been fixed in newer versions of Gnome. Debian supports up to 43.9 on the stable version and 48 in testing, so upgrading should be possible.
