Offline mode: issues (by design or user side?)

Dear Gnomists,

First post, but I’ve been reading here on and off. Have been using evolution for quite some years, but since early this year as the exclusive client to our University mail and calendar systems (Office365). Most of it works very nicely. Better than outlook, I would say.

One point, though, keeps popping up as an irritation: offline mode. As I have to travel regularly, I like to process emails on the train or other places without internet connection. That is what offline mode should facilitate, shouldn´t it?

However, sending emails (and then the actual sending through the outbox at a later stage) has resulted in lost emails. Sometimes it reaches the addressee, sometimes it doesn’t. In almost all cases it gets lost for me.

The other thing is: when I’ve read or replied to an email, I move it to a folder. That completely doesn’t work in offline mode. Even when I make all folders available offline (checkbox “Synchronize remote mail locally in all folders”). Also not when I explicitly download the mails before going offline so that all folders are visible.

And yes, that also happens when starting evolution in offline mode.

So my questions:

  • did I miss some setting or workflow that I should obey?
  • is this something that is planned to be implemented?
  • any work arounds?

Thanks for helping,

MaBo

System info: Ubuntu 24.04; Evolution: 3.60.2 (flathub); Server side: Office 365

Hi, offline mode allows reading mail that is locally cached. Whether mail is locally cached depends on your settings: Working Offline

What does “it gets lost for me” mean exactly when sending emails? What are your folder settings under “Defaults” for that account (see Edit > Preferences > Mail Accounts)? What makes you think that they are lost?

Moving a message into some remote folder does not work in offline mode, indeed.

Thanks Andre,

I have syncing for offline use for all folders enabled. And the folder structure is visible in offline mode. I would expect that I then can also move a mail from inbox to the offline folder, but that does not work. Would be a great feature!!!

And the mail gets lost for me in that it is not visible in the sent folder, nor somewhere else… And recently I sent two similar mails to two different colleagues. One did arrive, the other did not.

Any further help would be nice. Should I file a feature request for extending the use of the offline folders?

Thanks,

MaBo
