NetworkManager VPN plugins maintenance status update

Hi all,

The NetworkManager team has added End of Life notices for several NetworkManager VPN plugins it doesn’t actively develop but was still listed as maintainer for.

This notification is meant to communicate the current status to distributions and security researchers so they know where to send bug reports and what to expect.

End of life, no maintainer:

  • NetworkManager-vpnc [1]
Cisco compatible IKEv1 IPsec. NetworkManager-libreswan covers the same protocol family and is a possible migration target. Profiles have to be recreated and per-option parity has not been checked.

  • NetworkManager-fortisslvpn [2]
NetworkManager-openconnect supports the same older PPP-based Fortinet protocol.

Maintained outside the NetworkManager team with varying levels of activity/responsiveness:

  • NetworkManager-openconnect [3]
  • NetworkManager-iodine [4]
  • NetworkManager-sstp [5]

The NetworkManager team continues to maintain NetworkManager-libreswan [6] and NetworkManager itself, including its native WireGuard support.

For Fedora, a comps change removing vpnc and sstp from the desktop groups and adding libreswan as the vpnc replacement is under review [7]. The team members have given up their ownership of the affected Fedora packages.

The current VPN plugin maintenance status is also published on the NetworkManager website [8].

The team will continue to provide support for outside developers, who are maintaining plugins, on how to interface with NetworkManager.

Best,
Josie
