Hi, I really like the look of Gnome and the Adwaita theme, I don’t find user themes appealing, however one thing bugging me is the lack of custom accent colors. I am informed that the main reason for this is the worry about consistency with action buttons, or maybe consistency with the “intended look”.
So I am proposing something else now: additional shades of existing accent colors. I imagine it like a drop down or expandable menu, and it would let you choose extra variations of the main colors (maybe the ones that already exist - they would play the role of a category). It could be light and dark versions, or separate shades, for example a proper bluish green. Windows for instance has a ton of preset accent colors.
And also, I thought of a way to add custom accents while preserving consistency. In that same menu, under all the shades of a color, there could be an icon to add an user color. The action buttons and so on would inherit the colors that are set to match the main color, ensuring consistency. For example under the red colors, the user would be expected to add a shade of red, and the desktop will adjust for a red accent.
And the settings could probably memorize what shade you chose last, so when you’re switching between colors, it would keep your preferred shade.
Or, just a button on the side for a custom color can be added, and an algorithm to determine in which category it falls, what is the overall tone - red, yellow, green, etc.
I’m very sorry, I’m not into UI design, so I could only draw it badly in GIMP, but the idea should be visible:
