Michael Calabrese - New Memeber Introduction

Hi all,

My name is Michael Calabrese. I was a Google Summer of Code contributor to the Pitivi project this summer, in 2026, and I was just accepted as a new GNOME member.

I am starting my junior year as a Computer Engineering student at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and I am set to graduate with my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in May 2029. I’m over on the electrical and computer engineering side of things, so a lot of my coursework is assembly and CPU architecture. However, we take a decent number of computer science classes as well.

I am a long-time Linux user and created an Arch environment with a one-click installer for people who are less comfortable with hacking away at their systems. That installer gives users GNOME as the full desktop environment, along with Niri and Sway as tiling window managers. I have set up quite a few friends and family with it and brought a decent number of people into the Linux ecosystem who otherwise would not be. So I was really excited when I got a GSoC project with GNOME, as developing for GNOME is also developing for myself.

I am currently spending most of my time over in Pitivi; however, I am interested in learning more about Mutter and GTK-rs as well.

Thanks for having me!

-Michael Calabrese
