Localization of GIMP into Armenian

Hello GNOME Team,
How can I join the GIMP localizers team to start the localization of GIMP into Armenian?
Noticed that GIMP localization into Armenian is in poor condition.
Having long-lasting experience in localizing various FOSS products - LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Koha, Greenstone, VuFind, etc.

Hi! GIMP uses GNOME’s localisation platform, so its no different than translating any other GNOME app

Basically you’ll want to join the Armenian team: Armenian

Then you can start help translating GIMP (and/or any other GNOME software if you want to!) in Armenian.

Now I can’t help but notice that this team does not have a coordinator right now, which means you’ll probably need to apply for becoming the coordinator (normally joining the team would imply getting in touch with the coordinator, which is not possible here when such person does not exist!). I am not entirely sure what is the procedure for this, but asking on the Damned Lies tracker would probably be what I’d try: Issues · Infrastructure / damned-lies · GitLab

Hi Jehan,

thanks for your hints, and just a short question.

For translation I need to download (i) the .po file pressing on the “File to Translate (PO)” button, (ii) then using Notepad translate all msgid “….” strings content into msgstr “”, (iii) and then in the “New Action” window by selecting the action “Upload the new translation” line Upload the translated *.po file.

Am I correct?

I see there are no committers for Armenian, so you’ll probably want to send an issue about applying for being committer or coordinator of Armenian in order to send in translations.

We have a bit of backlog of applications at the moment, but are working on it.

I would recommend using a PO editor, for example Gtranslator https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.Gtranslator or Poedit https://poedit.net/

PO editors lowers the risk of error by handling the syntax, and just letting you change the text that should be translated.

You also get freebies, like correct plural forms, header bars or translation memory. That should probably be mentioned in the welcome page

It will be good to have a coordinator for the Armenian, and I will volunteer for that.

Could you please share the procedure for becoming a coordinator?

Please use a suitable translation tool, such as PoEdit. It’s ideal for this task, especially its translation memory feature, which is very useful.

You can file an issue at the Translation Coordination GitLab page I linked above.

I have some reading up to do on how applications have been handled historically, and then we’ll have to do some thinking in the coordination team on how to work from now on.
