Issues With Gnome Magnifier

Hey guys, I am fairly new to this forum and I am sure that this is not the right place to reach out to gnome devs; but, I do not think that I have any other option left. This post will be about the Accessibility Magnifier on Gnome Shell that for some reason does not get better. I have submitted 2 bug reports to gitlab about some bugs regarding the magnifier that has seemed important to me, yet I have not gotten sufficient feedback about what is causing these artifacts and whether they are fixable. While there are other annoying bugs I wish to report, it feels futile since no one is giving me feedback. I am not trying to be a Karen here, I am perfectly aware that most of you are here for the fun of it. However, these bugs are about accessibility and especially the last one makes the life harder for me. If I can get some feedback about what is underlying problem about the issues I am facing, I would be so thankful, I am somewhat tech literate; but, not enough to mess with a compositor.

Bugs:

Hello :waving_hand: While I cannot answer your questions or provide a solution to the issues you are experiencing, I think it’s important to echo a part from the first reply in the first issue:

Issues get fixed when someone volunteers to provide a patch. It’s up to individuals if and when they might work on an issue or not.

The reason you haven’t received further feedback in that issue is because there hasn’t been an individual interested to work on it yet and it doesn’t sound like a trivial task either. It might be more approachable if you split that issue into two separate ones (screenshots and initial zoom not being on cursor), since they sound unrelated to each other and the second one might be easier to deal with.

It really depends on the bug or request and whether there are interested parties willing to work on them, some are dealt with the same day they are opened.

For what it’s worth, gnome-screenshot is no longer maintained so that issue is unlikely to be fixed. However I believe you mean the screenshot UI that’s part of the shell, if so, you should re-open that issue in gnome-shell as that’s responsible for it. (Normally, someone would have moved it but since gnome-screenshot is not maintained, chances are that nobody saw it). Though, it does sound similar or at least related to your first issue.

You are right, the second issue was related to the first one. It was a hacky workaround since the Windowed Capture is meant to capture the window directly, bypassing the zoom affect on the compositor; however, I presume that they broke it when they switched to Wayland. I hope they would fix it since other compositors like of Cosmic lets it. But, enough for my rent, my question is that how should I split the first issue into 2? Should I leave the magnifier zoom section there and create a new one for the other artifact or create 2 new issues?

I would say the former, just make sure to update the title and body of the existing issue to reflect that.
