Is it possible to change the position of the login screen

Problem Description

When my system wakes up from sleeping the monitor displays the current input (e.g., DisplayPort, HDMI-1, HDMI-2, etc.) in a small box at the centre of the screen for about five seconds. As you can see in the attached photo, this box obscures the password field. This is inconvenient, as all feedback about the number of characters typed, etc., is lost.

The input selection window is different from the monitor’s On Screen Display (OSD) and, unlike the OSD, cannot be configured.

To be clear, this isn’t a bug, per se. It’s just an unfortunate interaction between two systems that are performing as designed.

To work around this issue with the monitor, I would like to be able to reposition the login dialog to an unobstructed part of the screen.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any way to change the login dialog position. I’ve checked gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.login-screen, and have spent too much time searching the internet.

I thought I’d check here before filing an enhancement request (which I assume I do by filing a bug report).

Environment

  • Fedora 42
  • Gnome Shell 48.4
  • Asus PG32UCDM Monitor

I think your best bet is looking at a extension that modifies the position of the lockscreen. There shouldn’t be a setting out-of-the-box to change that, so a extension would be needed to alter the behavior of it.

Adjusting 'OSD / Menu Transparency' in Monitor settings could help in some cases.

Alas, no. As I said, this display isn’t part of the OSD, and is therefore unaffected by any of the OSD settings, including position and transparency.
