How can I open NEF files in Shotwell

I am running Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, Gnome 64, AMD. I have a Nikon camera that has an option to store things in Nikon Electronic Format (NEF), so I have a bunch of files stored that way.

Shotwell does not recognize them; I get no thumbnails for them, and cannot open them. Is there a plug-in or something I can install that will allow me to handle NEF files in ways similar to other picture file formats?

This works fine with the NEF sample files that I have - can you provide one of the non-working ones somewhere?

I just tried, but it won’t upload an NEF file because it isn’t an authorized type. I tried renaming it to have a JPG extension, then the upload process said it couldn’t find the size of the file and suggested it was corrupted. Do you know of a way to get it uploaded?

Oh, I had this slightly wrong – it will OPEN the file, what I’m missing are thumbnails.

Ok, I changed a setting about the handling of RAW files in Shotwell, and now I have thumbnails. Thanks for the reply.

Now I wish I had thumbnails in file viewer…

Thumbnails in the File viewer are not done by Shotwell, I am afraid.
