GTK 4.16.7 on macOS

Hello,

(As far as I can see, this has not bee discussed before)

I am using GTK4 provided by Homebrew on macOS for my app (that uses OpenGL and GTKGLArea). Homebrew recently [1] updated to GTK 4.16.7 and now I don’t get to see any image (black screen where the opengl widget should be).

Some of my users are now reporting the same or similar (on github issues).

I tested the gtk4demo apps and they all now fail to run properly also (so I don’t think the issue is with my app) - “Gears” for example has a “blank” screen:

So I don’t think that the problem is merely on my computer.

Previous to this (sorry, I don’t recall the the version of GTK 4, but it was about a couple of months ago) I had noticed a dramatic improvement in the frame rate to how it had been last year (say before 4.12?) - it was shockingly ultra-smooth and even performed well when I turned on the framebuffer effects (intel iris graphics on a retina display!). It looked and felt lovely.

I have some time and energy to spend on this and I would like poke about and to help out if I can.

[1] not sure when

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi @Paul_Emsley, do you know which version of GTK you had installed before the upgrade?

Anyway I suggest opening an issue upstream: Issues · GNOME / gtk · GitLab

Hello again lb90 (you have replied to me before).

From above:
Aha! This looks related:

Thanks,

I’m not sure if it’s the same issue, though. It seems that the issue is present only on the development branch. The two commits that introduced the regression were never backported to gtk-4-16
